Add A Gun Safe Dehumidifier To Protect Your Safe Contents

Gun safe dehumidifiers come in a number of different styles and varieties.  Depending on the type of device that you install will also determine the method in which they protect your safe.  Some of these dehumidifiers work by circulating the air in the safe, while other simply focus on absorbing the moisture that makes it way in.

One of the best ways to control the humidity that makes it into the safe is to locate the safe in a dryer area of your home.  Air flow is different in each house, but you can generally find areas that keep dryer than others.  Often a basement is dryer than your garage, but this can be completely dependent on where you live and the airflow of each room.  If the humidity in the room is a problem, you can always install a dehumidifier to lower the humidity of the room, therefore lowering the humidity in your safe.

One common type of safe dehumidifier is a gun safe dehumidifier rod.  This is a rod that is placed in the safe to circulate the air.  The rod typically requires a permanent power source and can be connected by cord to the wall outlet.  Dehumidifier rods will typically specify on the packaging what the estimated cubic feet they are capable of dehumidifying.

Some outlet stores also offer portable or battery operated devices.  If you do not want to attach an electric safe dehumidifier, than this may be a good option.  These devices will require a little bit of maintenance on your part however.  After the battery runs out, it usually can be plugged into a wall outlet to recharge.

Another type of humidity reducing solution is to add silica boxes to the safe.  The silica box is designed to absorb the additional moisture in the box.  The box will have a measurement label that helps you determine when the gel is full and needs to be dried out.  To dry the silica box usually only requires baking it in the oven for a period of time.

Many suggest that the best solution to use is to combine both a gun safe dehumidifier and the silica box to the safe.  With both of these, you may have yourself a much more comprehensive solution to lowering the humidity in your safe.  Remember that none of these solutions will replace the proper care of your firearms, but can help to reduce the risk of damage by rust, mold, and mildew in the safe.
